How to spend the perfect weekend in Swansea Bay!
With Swansea being just under 3 hours from London Paddington, this was the perfect mini-staycation destination. Here is a 2-day itinerary breakdown of my favourite things to see, do & eat in the area...
Once you arrive, head to Prospect Place, where you will find The Georgian - a 5* boutique hotel right in the heart of Swansea. We stayed in the Heart of Oak room (which is apparently a favourite with the staff!) The hotel has been named one of the "Top 25 cosiest places to stay in the UK" and it's not hard to see why. Each room is luxuriously decorated in a classic style with individual flare. However, I loved the modern touches - the WIFI, Smart TV and Nespresso machine were well used!
Once you've dropped off your luggage, hop in an Uber or on a bus to Mumbles. You’ll spend the rest of the day here. Head straight to your Lunch reservation at Verdi’s, a coast-side cafĂ© famous for their ice cream sundaes. It's the perfect place to make the most of the alfresco dining on a sunny day.
It's just a short, coastal walk along promenade to Oystermouth Castle, a 12th century residence and fortress steeped in history. We were lucky enough to have a private tour. I absolutely love visiting and learning about old buildings and castles so the tour captivated me from start to finish. I loved learning about the renovation plans for the future and the wonderful volunteers who keep this important monument running.
Make sure you book for Dinner at On the Rocks and enjoy a sunset cocktail and evening meal at my new favourite restaurant! We had a couple of cocktails on the terrace that overlooks the sea - it was the most beautiful and peaceful cocktail I've ever had. I'd highly recommend the Slow Cooked Pork Belly to start and the Hot Stone Steak for your main course.
Mumbles Pier is right next door to On the Rocks. As most UK seaside towns do, Mumbles Pier boasts a traditional games arcade and even a Ferris Wheel (which we would have gone on if Matt wasn't scared of heights :p). We took a romantic sunset walk along the beach instead, before taking an Uber or bus home. Be aware that the last bus back to Swansea runs quite early in the evening - make sure you plan ahead.
The next morning, wake up at The Georgian to Breakfast in bed. You can select what you want, with the hotel staff, from an extensive menu the night before. I think this was probably one of my favourite parts of the hotel stay (along with having a bath in the gorgeous wash room!)
Swansea Harbour is just behind the hotel and is a beautiful area to explore in the day and evening. Keep going and you’ll find The Copper Jack, just in time for your boat tour. This community boat is run by a wonderful team of volunteers who take you on a thorough and informative tour of River Tawe. Learn about the significance of copper in Swansea's history, whilst sipping on a beverage from the on-board menu.
After alighting Jack, it’s just a short walk to the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, a vibrant and creative space that draws inspiration from the community and local artists. I loved learning about the new exhibitions and renovations touching down at the gallery soon.
By now, you’re probably in the mood for food, so I'd recommend Brunch at The Green Room, a new space right next to Swansea arena. The Green Room serves up a delicious, brunchy menu by day and a pre-gig venue by night. Think - pancakes and cappuccinos, hash browns and toasties.
Once you've finished your French toast, you’re just a short walk back to The Georgian Hotel to collect your luggage and catch your train home!
